Nose Surgery

What you need to know about Rhinoplasty

Did you know that by the time you finish your compulsory education your nose is fully developed? Genetics determine most of your nasal features and after age 16, they are unlikely to change on their own. If you want to change the appearance of your nose, you should consider rhinoplasy surgery.

The first step is to speak with your primary care physician. Although, in most cases, he does not perform nose surgery; he will be able to help you with realistic expectations and recommend a reputable clinic.

Next, you need to meet with the surgeon you have chosen for the rhinoplasty and determine an appropriate hospital. Come in with an open mind and freely discuss any concerns you have with the doctor. The purpose of nose surgery is not to give you a new nose; but to enhance the appearance of your current one. Be realistic with your expectations.

On the day of the surgery, you will not eat anything before the procedure as you will be receiving anesthesia. The nose surgery will last for a few hours. In some cases, you can go home immediately; other cases require an overnight stay. Your doctor will inform you before the surgery as to whether you will be able to go immediately home.

After the surgery, expect to be sore. Most patients experience some swelling and bruising. This will last for 2-3 weeks. Slowly, your nose will begin to heal and you will see your new features. However, it can take up to 3-4 months for your nose to heal completely. It will be important to avoid crowds and places where you could catch a cold or get sick. You will not be able to blow your nose for the first month.

All surgery requires serious consideration. There are always possible risks and you should carefully weigh your decision. There are many reputable organizations that can provide you with surgery statistics including The British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS). Also, be sure to consider your budget. In most cases, rhinoplasty is considered elective surgery and your will be responsible for the entire cost of the procedure. You are not alone in considering rhinoplasty, it is one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery in the UK.
