Dental Insurance

Dental Insurance and Orthodontics

Traditionally, dental insurance does not cover orthodontia or other cosmetic dental costs. It is considered optional. However, sometimes orthodontic work is deemed clinically necessary, and in this case, may be covered by your dental insurance policy.

Dental braces are used to treat a variety of dental issues including: cross bites, under or over bites, teeth straightening, and bite problems. Ideally, it is better to start brace work younger; although, anyone who has a significant bite issue could benefit from orthodontia.

If you are fortunate to have an NHS provider who recommends orthodontics for your child, some policies may also cover this expense. Certain dental insurance companies cover all NHS dentistry. Carefully read the policy and its exclusions before relying on this method of payment.

Another option can be to finance orthodontic work. Many companies offer 0% finance for cosmetic dentistry. In this case, a private provider would be chosen. NHS providers can fit braces; often the selection is very limited. A private provider has many options including invisible braces to offer and they can tailor the brace work to the patient’s individual needs.

Finally, consider visiting a local dental school. The work is performed by supervised students. This can result in significant savings. In addition, you are providing a type of community service. In order to learn, students must practice. Since they are well supervised, and up on the latest technology; you may get a better job than at a traditional provider.

It is important to consider all of your options when choosing a dental insurance plan. Many offer substantial value and piece of mind for you and your family.
